My Story
I started Tee off Fore A Cause in late 2008. My sons, both Army Infantry Officers were deployed to Iraq at the same time. Finding myself pre-occupied with thinking about them and the young men serving with them, I felt compelled to do something useful. It wasn’t long into my oldest son’s deployment with the 2BN-22INF RGT of 1 BCT with 10th MTN Div. that he lost his driver, a young guy of only 19. Pvt. Jack Sweet was killed in an IED attack. My wife met Jack at the pre-deployment ceremony at Ft. Drum, and she asked him if he was old enough to drive. He laughed and said he had gotten his license a year before. Before he boarded the bus to the air field he told my wife “Don’t worry ma’am, I’ll make sure LT Kane gets home safe”. She called me and related the story as they were leaving and she told me she didn’t think he had even shaved more than a few times. About 3 months later we found out that Jack was killed.
That was a tipping point for me. I reached out to friends of mine who were veterans or had family members in the military and we sat down and formed a committee, then a corporation and we jumped through the necessary hoops to obtain our 501C3 status. The first tournament was in 2009, since then we have held tournaments in 2010 and 2011 and we have also helped a group in Charleston run a tournament this year. Tee Off Fore A Cause, Inc. has raised about $32,000 for Wounded Warrior Project with a lot of help from our committee, local, regional and national sponsors. 2012 will be the 4th Golf Tournament and we are hoping to make some great changes and additions to it. I will be sharing those plans here, so please follow Tee Off Fore A Cause! If you have any questions, want to start a tournament, sponsor, play or donate you may call on me anytime…24/7/365.
